- CALL FOR EXHIBITION AND PUBLICATION PROJECTS CALL FOR PERFORMANCE PROJECTS DEADLINE > OCTOBER 31ST 2008 In January 2009 Dazibao will present an exhibition by Dutch conceptual artist, performer, filmmaker and photographer Bas Jan Ader. On the occasion of this event, entitled Gravité, Dazibao will organize an evening of performances inspired by Ader’s work. Bas Jan Ader - Gravité The exhibition includes three videos projected on a loop that show Bas Jan Ader falling, trying to defy gravity. Not without a quiet humour as well as a certain romanticism, Jan Ader’s conceptual performances, created for the camera, provoke a state of expectation and contemplation, leaving the viewer on the lookout for the moment when the artist relinquishes his hold on gravity. The exhibition is completed by two additional works playing on gravity in a completely different register: the famous I’m Too Sad To Tell You, showing a close-up of the artist in tears, and Night Fall. Bas Jan Ader was born in The Netherlands but lived and worked for many years in California. Despite his tragic death at sea in 1975 while crossing the Atlantic aboard a tiny sailboat, he left an important body of work whose conceptual influence is particularly meaningful today. With the present call, we invite artists from different disciplines to submit a proposal for a performance that engages both with the thematic of the exhibition as well as the work of Ader. Artistic excellence, depth of ideas and reflection, as well as feasibility of the project will be the main criteria for selection. Each piece should be maximum 20 minutes long and should take into consideration the space of the gallery, which includes a large exhibition space and a smaller, dark projection room. Please refer to the gallery floor plan on this website. Projects outside of the gallery space would also be considered. The selected performances will be presented on January 8, 2009 on the occasion of the opening of Gravité. YOUR PROPOSAL MUST INCLUDE 1. a curriculum vitae 2. a 500 word description of the intended performance project, including a clear mention on how it enters into dialogue with the thematic of the exhibition and Ader’s work. 3. a visual dossier (formatted in PowerPoint, MAC compatible) - 10 images maximum 4. a list of any specific technical needs and prop details 5. a self-addressed envelope, if you wish to have your proposal returned to you. We do not accept proposals via e-mail. Incomplete submissions or submissions sent after the competition closing date will not be accepted. Please send only one proposal per artist. Send to :
