For the exhibition mécanismes d'intérieurs, Manon Labrecque, with all the ingenuity she is known for, creates states of mind and gives rise to troubling inner sensations through the invention of her own mechanisms for shooting video footage, which she links to simple actions of the body.
In an installation entitled mécaniques affectives, which combines sound and four simultaneous projections, Manon Labrecque explores movement and fixity by means of video images whose motorised shooting mechanisms of her own design make possible self-shoots which interact directly with the artist’s body. In these short films, the subject is immobile or carrying out minor and sometimes repetitive actions which appear to respond to or even enter into dialogue with the object recording her image. With this work, Manon Labrecque has created a mechanised psychic world summoning up strange affects.
Two other works complete the exhibition: s’arranger l’portrait and les solitudes. s’arranger l’portrait consists of several physical variations on the theme of the portrait and the fixed -yet absent! -image. It highlights the difficulty in stopping on an image and of providing a fixed image of oneself, demonstrating both our ambivalence towards our own representation and the paradox between the photographic image and the moving image. les solitudes, for its part, plays with fixity in a completely different manner. Its movement, although highly significant, is intercepted, and only a few fractions of a second remain to upset the meaning and emotional charge of the images.
