LANTERNES / LIGHTHOUSES
An exhibition of Éric Raymond
The exhibition runs from March 8 to April 8, 2001
Éric Raymonds work question photographic images, which are captured and etched on a support through a fleeting
encounter with light, images referring to this world and seemingly extracting a fragment from it. In his past pieces from Bestiaire figuré (1984-94), or in À la manière des
romans, the artist has been using the plastic qualities of photography and video to interconnect visual and verbal languages, within a realm both conceptual and poetical.
For the past few years, the artist has been building a corpus of works entitled Lanternes/Lighthouses, which is about the interdependency of images, ideas and objects. His recent installations question
perceptions as well as representations, and underline the precarious nature of electronic images whose appearance is conditional upon the use of light generating devices, such as a computer with
its screen. Furthermore, Raymonds works examine the evanescent aspect of revealed images, which depend on unfolding psychic processes.
The pieces presented at Dazibao are objects like these cherry wood vases filled with ink incorporating sound elements and video images delivered through speakers and cathodic screens
that have been taken out of their cases Sensors and touch-sensitive screens make those images interactive and certain sounds become "visible" through vibration effects. The viewer is thus
invited to reconsider the metaphysical division existing between the worlds of ideas, images and objects, as well as the space which lies between languages and things.
Éric Raymond was born in 1962, and he lives and works in Montréal His work was recently shown at the gallery Sequence of Chicoutimi. An Art teacher at lÉcole des arts
visuels et médiatiques, Université du Québec à Montréal since 1993, he often participates in conferences and has published articles in various Art magazines, such
as Parachute. Since 1991 Raymonds activities have been centered on video as well as electronic arts, and he has taken part in many events and festivals in Canada, the United States and Europe.
