In this booklet, published on the occasion of the exhibition Carte grise à Gilbert Boyer, we follow the author as he unravels the mystery of the unusual practice of François Loriot and Chantal Mélia. These artists, by the careful arrangement of objects, and by effects of lighting and shadow, create images with all the qualities of photographs but without using a single photographic mechanism. The text, which provides an intimate glimpse of the author's reflections, invites us to let go of photography without abandoning it, to speak about it in new ways; in short, to render the very essence of photography without actually resorting to photography.
